CONTESTS
Speed Films
Ask Patrons to write in the most number of famous racing,
or youth-in-trouble films. Racing: i.e. "Fireball 500", "The
Green Helmet", "The Crowd Roars", Youth: "The Young
Lovers", "The Bad Seed", "West Side Story".
Speed Songs
Arrange special radio program dedicated to famous songs
about youth and cars. Ask listeners to identify tunes such as "G.T.O.",
"Stick-Shift Baby", "Yellow Rolls Royce". There are
also a lot of singing groups named after cars, "The Impalas",
"The Corvettes".
Speed Man
Send a borrowed hot rod around town, and have deejay announce clues about
its color, make, year, and give prizes for whoever spots it on its route,
or identifies the car.
Speed Stories
See if you can get people to tell a newspaper or radio audience about
their most terrifying experiences on the highway, or when they were teenagers.
A Warning to Wild Ones
Public safety campaigns couldn't ask for a better case examples than HOT
RODS TO HELL. Supply stills and posters to any campaigns concurrent with
your engagement. Set up a public safety message in front of your theatre
by setting up a near-obliterated car accompanied with copy: "Don't
become a HOT RODer TO HELL! Drive safely, we want you to live."
Hobby Stores
The model slot-car racers are big business. A local hobby store would
be glad to decorate their displays with sheets and display material from
HOT RODS TO HELL. Perhaps they would want to erect a slot-car display
in your lobby to promote their product. By asking patrons to come try
their hand at racing in your lobby, many extra box-office ducats can be
realized.
Hot Rods Clubs
There are numerous ways to work with the burgeoning hot rod, drag race,
customizing and sports car clubs across the country. An opening-day procession
will gather crowds if you can get several cars bannered and armed with
models and loudspeakers heralding your local premiere. If you can arrange
a special drag race commemorating the film, media personalities could
be offered a free ride to demonstrate the movie's excitement. A few autos
touring the city with copy would be effective ballyhoo. See if you can
get some local enthusiasts to discuss the contrasts between the film and
safe, regulated drag and sports racing for interviews and feature stories.
Dance Contest
Arrange the create a frantic new dance step called the "DRAG"
with local discotheques, dance set-ups, and at prominent college or high
school occasions. If you offer some records, passes, and a night on the
town, it will cause tremendous word-of-mouth among the young set.
Drivers Education
Promote a driver's test to see if they could become qualified HOT RODDERS.
In an empty lot or supermarket's parking pavilion, set up an obstacle
course to test driver's ability and reactions. Tied-in with a local school's
driver's education course, a stunt like this could gather newspaper space.
