Died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Was married to Mary Louise McConnelly July 23, 1938 - December 13, 1981 (her death)
During the McCarthy pogroms in Hollywood "Mac" left the motion picture industry for about a year and did architectural delineation (renderings) for many notable architects in the LA area, many of whom had been class-mates of his at USC. He won an oscar and was nominated a total of 5 times.
