Filmed in 1966 and released in 1967, Hot Rods to Hell was originally made for TV and it's working title was "52 Miles to Miles to Terror". MGM thought it was good enough to release in the theaters and renamed it Hot Rods to Hell. Rumor has it that the main reason it did not go straight to TV was due to the subject matter and it was too risqué for general TV audiences. In fact, there is a scene in the Arena where Duke has a Coke bottle on his table. In the film, it was "blacked" out (censored) by the company because they did not want their product associated with a character like Duke. This is also rumored to be the first censorship of a brand name product in a movie or TV.
